Reporting to Dr. Neelam Khaper, Associate Professor, Physiology and Dr. Simon Lees, Associate Professor, Physiology in the Medical Sciences Division, this position will support various research activities at NOSM Lakehead University Campus Research Laboratory. The Research Assistant intern will be responsible for assisting with the microPET projects, including imaging, data collection, animal care, preparation of documents and conducting experiments. This position is covered by the Term and Conditions of the OPSEU Staff Unit 677 Collective Agreement. A copy is available at: www.nosm.ca/careers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Conducts various research experiments

 Preparation of reagents, solutions, and materials for use in the lab

 Assists in the creation of standard operating procedures for various pieces of equipment

 Participates in the gathering of data, compilation, and presentation necessary for various special

reports or projects, as requested

 Support for data collection

 Preparation and submission of animal care documents

 Maintain study logs and databases

 Uses multiple office software applications including word processing, database management, spreadsheets, graphs, and presentation software, email and internet

 Optimizes and trouble shoots various protocols on laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, running standards, performing validation tests, and performing routine maintenance tasks

 Works with animal and radioactive isotopes

 Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: Education (as required candidate criteria of the Northern Ontario Internship Program):  A University or College graduate who has graduated within the last three (3) years from an

accredited college or university. The candidate must be a graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma in Life or Health Sciences (biology, chemistry, physiology). The position will be a first full- time employment in the candidate’s field of study.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 A valid Driver’s License is required  The Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations that apply to the work being performed

 Knowledge of laboratory equipment and usage

 Work effectively in a team environment

 Analyze and problem solve issues

 Effectively make decisions

 Work effectively under time pressures

 Work within established practices, protocols and policies

 Travel if required

 Work independently and cooperatively as part of a team

Language:

 Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)

 French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
